The Baptist Theological Seminary (BTA), Budapest represents evangelical Christian spirituality as an institution of higher education. The College Chaplaincy has a significant role in achieving this.
Ferenc Újvári, the head of the Chaplaincy, himself a practicing Baptist pastor, and Anikó Újváriné Szabó, a staff member with decades of experience in Hungarian and international Baptist women’s missions, are available to provide spiritual support to students, faculty, and staff who need it.
The chaplaincy serves to promote the regular study of scripture and attendance at services by students. Thus, it provides for the review of Bible reading and worship service diaries and the organization and support of seminary worship services and spiritual exercises in Budapest and in rural locations.
Spiritual equipping of students preparing for pastoral ministry in congregations is a key task of the chaplaincy. This includes the organization of church and legation practices, ongoing contact with students and instructor pastors, and preparation for the annual assessment of Baptist pastoral ministry students.
The ministry maintains contact with graduate Baptist minister candidates starting out in ministry and newly ordained pastors to assist their further development and integration into the Baptist community and congregations.
Another task of the Chaplaincy is to assist and evaluate the field practice of the students of the institution.
Our theology’s motto is particularly emphasized in the ministry of the chaplaincy, the well-known passage from II Peter:
“For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge…” II Peter 1:5
